Heavy Diesel Mechanic

Certificate III

Diesel engines are known for their durability and high performance, which is why they're used in high-performance vehicles such as buses, large trucks, boats, tractors, dump trucks, cranes, and even some cars and light trucks. They operate differently than gasoline engines and, therefore, require specific care and maintenance procedures. Diesel engine mechanics perform everything from oil changes to complete engine rebuilds.

This professional needs to be well-versed in the electrical system, the engine, and all the parts that make the vehicle work. Additionally, they must handle technical and mechanical aspects, often using diagnostic software on more modern vehicles to identify problems.

Graduates will have skills in several areas of mechanics, including:

  • Engines
  • Maintenance and overhaul procedures
  • Safety in the workplace
  • Tools and equipment
  • Maintenance of brakes, cooling system and fuel system
